Amongst the Palms
Florida, 2024

Florida has a reputation as a sun-soaked paradise. The combination of sub-tropical climate and a relaxed lifestyle as well as tax benefits make it an attractive business location with a wide range of leisure activities. The peninsula is renowned for its expansive coastline and lush wetlands, which contribute to its biodiversity. In all directions, from vibrant streets to the tranquil shores, the landscape is abundant with palm trees. In cities like Miami, proposals have been made to remove large-leaved green plants, once artificially spread as shade providers; but these involve environmental, economic and safety concerns. Florida’s ecosystem is at risk from the effects of climate change, which include extreme weather events, warming temperatures, seasonal drought and sea level rise. The conservation of wildlife and natural habits stands in contrast to residential development.

A population of 21 million in Florida is comprised of people from varying ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds. The state boasts of numerous senior communities, but it also faces a growing issue of homelessness. While the diversity enriches the cultural tapestry, its demographics get centre stage in political discourse. There is tension over issues such as immigration, social justice, healthcare and gun control measures. Florida used to be recognised as a swing state in presidential elections. Donald Trump is among Florida's residents, having chosen the 27th state as his primary domicile. His acquisition of the real estate Mar-a-Lago in 1985 marked a shift in the dynamics: Florida has gained international media attention, boosted the economy and increased tourism, attracting millions of visitors annually.

This is a preview from the wider project. Captured during a two-week-long photographic road trip in March 2024, the images showcase these Florida destinations: Daytona Beach, Fort Myers, Jacksonville Beach, Miami, Ochopee, Orlando, Panama City Beach, Tallahassee, Tampa and West Palm Beach.
